Outreach to the Community

As part of my interest in critical race praxis, I find it important to engage in work that directly informs the daily experiences of K-12 students and teachers. A third more recent line of research and inquiry arises from my commitment to reflection and action (i.e., praxis as defined by Paulo Freire) through providing educators with culturally relevant professional development that challenges them to examine the complexity of race and educational (in)equity, the critique of self in the teaching and learning process, and a liberatory form of teaching and learning that advocates for justice and equity. Hence, I am working to promote a critical race praxis in K-12 educators. My early career research has significant implications for a) how K-12 administrators think about district- and building-level policies and interventions for closing opportunity and achievement gaps; b) how conversations around race/racism are framed at various levels of school districts, ranging from the school board meeting room to the classroom; and, c) how preservice and in-service teachers develop a critical race pedagogy and engage in critical race praxis daily.

I also believe in empowering youth to affect change in their schools and broader communities. I find it important to engage in projects that allow youth to develop their leadership skills, enact social justice projects, and participate in civic engagement.
